TWO HOUR MOSAIC COURSE
Are you fascinated by the ancient art of mosaic, eager to challenge yourself, but have very little time available?
This course could be the perfect choice for you!
You will discover all the steps needed to create a mosaic using the Ravenna method on cement mortar.
After a brief introduction to the work of the studio, it will be up to you to choose the design you would like to create from a selection of drawings proposed by our studio, together with the materials and colors that inspire you the most.
You will have at your disposal marble, smalti, and small ceramic pieces to recreate a design that is simple yet striking.
You will then proceed with the preparation of the cement mortar and learn how to transfer the design onto the mortar.
Once the design has been transferred, you will finally proceed with the execution of the mosaic, tessera by tessera, until completion.
At the end of the course, your mosaic will be ready to take home with you — a beautiful souvenir of Ravenna!

GOAL
The goal will be to create one mosaic of about 10 × 10 cm (4x4 inches)

This course allows you to create a beautiful small mosaic inspired by an ancient Byzantine, Roman, or Medieval detail. You will craft a replica using the same materials as the ancients did — and as we still do today at Koko Mosaico. At your disposal: marbles, precious Venetian smalti, and even a touch of gold tesserae.
In the morning, you’ll dedicate yourself to cutting the tesserae using ancient tools such as the hammer and the hardie. In the afternoon, you’ll be ready to work on the cement mortar, learn how we transfer the design, and discover all the small details and care that go into creating a faithful and elegant reproduction from the past.
At the end of the course, the mosaic will be yours to take home as a unique and personal memory of this experience.
Whether you’re an experienced mosaicist or trying mosaic for the first time, attending this course and working with this technique on a subject inspired by the ancients will allow you to learn, experiment, and fully immerse yourself in how we create mosaics here in our atelier.

ABOUT THREE HOURS
With this course you'll have the opportunity to create something special with your family, while learning the techniques of an ancient craft. Have you ever wondered how a mosaic is made? And what materials are used? How is the design transferred onto the cement? How does one cut the material into small bits (tesserae)? In this course you'll have fun while making a mosaic from start to finish. The course consists of a tour of our studio, the explanation of just what a mosaicist does, a demonstration of cutting material into 'tesserae' using the traditional hammer and hardie, preparation of the cement, the transfer of the design, and the creation of your own mosaic measuring approximately 25x 25 cm (a mosaic of this dimension allows up to six people to work simultaneously).
The final piece is yours and is ready to take home and hang on the wall a memory of a shared time and a souvenir of Ravenna, made with your own hands.

The goal will be to create one mosaic of about 25x 25 cm.
If you wish to approach mosaic in an authentic way, stepping for a few hours into the slow and fascinating rhythm of our studio, this course is designed for you.
In half a day, you will discover the fundamental steps of the Ravenna technique on cement mortar, a method closely connected to the ancient tradition of mosaic, and create a small mosaic with your own hands from start to finish.
You will work within a beautiful and simple wooden frame and choose your subject from a selection of Roman, Byzantine, or Medieval mosaic details proposed by our studio.
You will learn how cement mortar is prepared, how it is spread inside the frame to become the stable and lasting support of the mosaic, and how the design is transferred from the grid onto the fresh mortar.
The tesserae, already cut by us so that you can focus on the composition, will be available to you in different materials and colours: marble, Venetian smalti, and gold tesserae.
Tessera by tessera, you will discover how to set them into the mortar and how to create a harmonious mosaic inspired by antiquity, just as we do every day in our studio.
At the end of the course, the mosaic will be yours and ready to take home with you!
