JUNE 2026 - SPECIAL COURSE: Doormat Mosaic course
During this course, you will create a functional marble mosaic doormat measuring approximately 58 × 38 cm, a true mosaic “carpet”, choosing from 6 design options provided by us.
This is not just a decorative project, but a durable architectural piece of art, designed to welcome guests into your home, enhance an entryway, or even become a commissioned work for clients.
You will be guided through every phase of the process, from the initial design stage to the final finishing. Inspired by ancient Roman floor mosaics, the project is based on simple shapes, strong composition, and thoughtful andamento, making it achievable for all levels while honoring traditional craftsmanship.
You will learn how to select materials, cut tesserae, prepare the temporary support, and work using the indirect (reverse) method up to the final pouring.
At the end of the course, you will take home a beautiful mosaic carpet handmade by you, ready to use, together with a certificate of participation.

GOAL

Have you ever had the chance to visit Pompeii and admire the extraordinary Battle of Issus with Alexander the Great?
Or have you ever seen ancient mosaics made with extremely small, almost millimetric tesserae?
This very refined type of mosaic is known as Opus vermiculatum and is considered one of the absolute peaks of Hellenistic- Greek and Roman mosaic art.
It was the type of mosaic that most closely imitated, and even competed with, painting.
The Opus Vermiculatum Course is an intensive and highly specializing experience, during which you will learn the Ravenna direct technique on clay, ideal for creating copies from antiquity of this type of masterpiece.
You will work on a small detail chosen by you from a wide selection curated by us, inspired by famous ancient opus vermiculatum works, such as the curious motifs of the ‘unswept floors’, preserved between the Vatican Museums in Rome and Aquileia.
A course designed for those who wish to enter the heart of the ancient mosaic tradition, rediscovering the pleasure of slow work and the highest level of precision.

GOAL
The goal will be to create a mosaic of about 20 x 20 cm.
How can an image be transformed into a mosaic?
Do you have a drawing, a painting, or a photograph that you would like to see reinterpreted through this ancient art?
During this course, you will learn how to transpose a personal project into a mosaic work.
You will propose the images that inspire you most and, together with the Koko Mosaico staff, we will choose the one best suited to this process.
You will work using the Ravenna technique on cement mortar, proceeding in sections: day after day you will build each part of the work until its completion.
You will have access to marbles, precious Venetian smalti, as well as unconventional materials and innovative technical solutions, designed to give a fresh, original, and contemporary character to the final piece.
