RAVENNA'S TECHNIQUE COURSE 40 HOURS
This course offers the opportunity to learn two Ravenna techniques: direct method on temporary binder (lime) and direct method on cement mortar.
The direct method on lime, invented in the 20th century in Ravenna, allows for methodical and precise work, enabling the creation of high-quality mosaic artworks.
Through the direct method on cement mortar, on the other hand, you will learn to create the mosaic gradually, in sections, day by day.
All steps and secrets of both techniques will be explained, with a focus on practical experience in cutting tesserae using the hammer and hardie.
You will have access to a variety of materials, including marble, smalti, and gold. During the course, we will focus on creating a replica of both a Roman and a Byzantine or medieval mosaic detail. Upon completion of the course, thanks to the acquired skills, you will be able to create all the mosaics you desire independently!

DURATION
The total duration of the course is 40 hours with lessons from Monday to Friday (h 9.00 - 13.00, 14.00 - 18.00)
GOAL
The goal will be to create two mosaics, one of about 12x16 inches and the other one 10x14 inches.
(9:00-13:00 OR 14:00-18:00)
You will make a copy of an ancient mosaic from the Roman, Byzantine or Medieval period, cemented directly onto a substrate.
You'll participate in every phase of the creation of your piece (except for the cutting of material into small pieces using traditional tools, the hardie and the hammer, however you will see a cutting demonstration). You can choose between marble, glass (smalti) and/or gold tessere, depending on which design you have chosen to copy.

DURATION

In this course, you will learn how to use Italian and Mexican smalti, cut into small square tesserae, to create a composition that appears spontaneous but is carefully designed to generate rhythm, texture, and movement. You will also focus on color gradation and smooth transitions, with Arianna guiding you step by step.
Whether you're creating a background or a stand-alone abstract piece, this method brings a fresh energy to mosaic making—fun and liberating. It’s a technique that allows you to move beyond traditional andamento, while staying grounded in fine craftsmanship and your artistic intuition.

HALF-DAY, ABOUT THREE HOURS
With this course you'll have the opportunity to create something special with your family, while learning the techniques of an ancient craft. Have you ever wondered how a mosaic is made? And what materials are used? How is the design transferred onto the cement? How does one cut the material into small bits (tesserae)? In this course you'll have fun while making a mosaic from start to finish. The course consists of a tour of our studio, the explanation of just what a mosaicist does, a demonstration of cutting material into 'tesserae' using the traditional hammer and hardie, preparation of the cement, the transfer of the design, and the creation of your own mosaic measuring approximately 25x 25 cm (a mosaic of this dimension allows up to six people to work simultaneously).
The final piece is yours and is ready to take home and hang on the wall a memory of a shared time and a souvenir of Ravenna, made with your own hands.
