RAVENNA'S TECHNIQUE COURSE 20 HOURS
This course introduces you to the Ravenna technique on thinset/mortar, teaching you how to create a mosaic artwork by working in sections. Throughout the course, you will work on a mosaic inspired by an ancient detail from the Byzantine, Roman, or Medieval era, using the same materials that were used centuries ago and that we still favor at Koko Mosaico: fine marbles, Venetian smalti, and even gold tesserae.
On the first day of the course, you'll choose your subject from the many ancient mosaic designs available in our studio.
You will learn about tracing papers, and you will have the opportunity to cut some of the materials into tesserae using the traditional tools: the hammer and hardie.
You will also learn how to prepare the mortar, transfer the design onto it, and correctly place the tesserae. Finally, you will deepen your understanding of the "andamenti", essential for creating a harmonious composition.
Section by section, with patience and precision, you will complete your beautiful mosaic.
At Koko Mosaico, we use this technique daily to create most of our works! Once you've mastered it, you can also use it to create modern mosaics, thus opening up new creative possibilities for your future projects.

HALF-DAY, ABOUT THREE HOURS
With this course you'll have the opportunity to create something special with your family, while learning the techniques of an ancient craft. Have you ever wondered how a mosaic is made? And what materials are used? How is the design transferred onto the cement? How does one cut the material into small bits (tesserae)? In this course you'll have fun while making a mosaic from start to finish. The course consists of a tour of our studio, the explanation of just what a mosaicist does, a demonstration of cutting material into 'tesserae' using the traditional hammer and hardie, preparation of the cement, the transfer of the design, and the creation of your own mosaic measuring approximately 25x 25 cm (a mosaic of this dimension allows up to six people to work simultaneously).
The final piece is yours and is ready to take home and hang on the wall a memory of a shared time and a souvenir of Ravenna, made with your own hands.

GOAL
The goal will be to create one mosaic of about 25x 25 cm.

You will make a copy of an ancient mosaic from the Roman, Byzantine or Medieval period, cemented directly onto a substrate.
You'll participate in every phase of the creation of your piece (except for the cutting of material into small pieces using traditional tools, the hardie and the hammer, however you will see a cutting demonstration). You can choose between marble, glass (smalti) and/or gold tessere, depending on which design you have chosen to copy.

DURATION
The total duration of the course is 4 hours with lessons in these hours 9:00-13:00 or 14:00-18:00.
GOAL
The goal will be to create one mosaic of about 7x7 inches.
Students will be able to do copies from ancient roman floors mosaic in opus vermiculatum, the most refined mosaic, with tiny tesserae (from 1 to 4 mm).
This is a particular kind of mosaic with polychrome tesserae, variegated, multi-colored and fine, complex and refined drawing.
