RAVENNA'S TECHNIQUES COURSE
This course offers the opportunity to learn two Ravenna techniques: direct method on temporary binder (lime) and direct method on cement mortar.
The direct method on lime, invented in the 20th century in Ravenna, allows for methodical and precise work, enabling the creation of high-quality mosaic artworks.
Through the direct method on cement mortar, on the other hand, you will learn to create the mosaic gradually, in sections, day by day.
All steps and secrets of both techniques will be explained, with a focus on practical experience in cutting tesserae using the hammer and hardie.
You will have access to a variety of materials, including marble, smalti, and gold. During the course, we will focus on creating a replica of both a Roman and a Byzantine or medieval mosaic detail. Upon completion of the course, thanks to the acquired skills, you will be able to create all the mosaics you desire independently!

GOAL
The goal will be to create two mosaics, the first one of about 30 x 30 cm and the second one of cm 32 x 25
Are you attracted by the ancient art of mosaic, do you want to get involved, but you have very little time available? In this short course, you will discover the steps of the direct technique on thinset, you will have the opportunity to create a small mosaic that will remain yours.
At your disposal marbles, smalti and small ceramics, the result will be a beautiful souvenir of Ravenna!

GOAL
The goal will be to create one mosaic of about 4x4 inches.
This course introduces you to the Ravenna technique on thinset/mortar, teaching you how to create a mosaic artwork by working in sections. Throughout the course, you will work on a mosaic inspired by an ancient detail from the Byzantine, Roman, or Medieval era, using the same materials that were used centuries ago and that we still favor at Koko Mosaico: fine marbles, Venetian smalti, and even gold tesserae.
On the first day of the course, you'll choose your subject from the many ancient mosaic designs available in our studio.
You will learn about tracing papers, and you will have the opportunity to cut some of the materials into tesserae using the traditional tools: the hammer and hardie.
You will also learn how to prepare the mortar, transfer the design onto it, and correctly place the tesserae. Finally, you will deepen your understanding of the "andamenti", essential for creating a harmonious composition.
Section by section, with patience and precision, you will complete your beautiful mosaic.
At Koko Mosaico, we use this technique daily to create most of our works! Once you've mastered it, you can also use it to create modern mosaics, thus opening up new creative possibilities for your future projects.

GOAL
The goal will be to create a mosaic of about 32 x 23 cm.
(11:00-13:00 AND 14:00-18:00)
This course allows you to create a beautiful small mosaic inspired by an ancient Byzantine, Roman, or Medieval detail. You will craft a replica using the same materials as the ancients did — and as we still do today at Koko Mosaico. At your disposal: marbles, precious Venetian smalti, and even a touch of gold tesserae.
In the morning, you’ll dedicate yourself to cutting the tesserae using ancient tools such as the hammer and the hardie. In the afternoon, you’ll be ready to work on the cement mortar, learn how we transfer the design, and discover all the small details and care that go into creating a faithful and elegant reproduction from the past.
At the end of the course, the mosaic will be yours to take home as a unique and personal memory of this experience.
Whether you’re an experienced mosaicist or trying mosaic for the first time, attending this course and working with this technique on a subject inspired by the ancients will allow you to learn, experiment, and fully immerse yourself in how we create mosaics here in our atelier.
