This course allows you to create a beautiful small mosaic inspired by an ancient Byzantine, Roman, or Medieval detail. You will craft a replica using the same materials as the ancients did—and as we still do at Koko Mosaico. At your disposal: marbles, precious Venetian smalti, and even a touch of gold tesserae.
You will bring your artwork to life by experiencing every phase of the Ravenna method on thinset/mortar: from cutting tesserae with ancient tools such as the hammer and the hardie, preparing the cementitious adhesive, transferring the design, mastering the best way to set the tesserae and understanding the fundamentals of "andamento"—all the way to completing your piece.
At the end of the course, the mosaic will be yours to take home as a unique and personal memory of this experience.
Whether you’re an experienced mosaicist or trying mosaic for the first time, working with this technique on a subject inspired by the ancients will allow you to learn, experiment, and dive deeply into how we create mosaics here in our atelier.

You will make a copy of an ancient mosaic from the Roman, Byzantine or Medieval period, cemented directly onto a substrate.
You'll participate in every phase of the creation of your piece (except for the cutting of material into small pieces using traditional tools, the hardie and the hammer, however you will see a cutting demonstration). You can choose between marble, glass (smalti) and/or gold tessere, depending on which design you have chosen to copy.
